Related projects

No project exists in isolation: COUNTLESS is based on previous work by the project partners, has a sibling project, will build on the experiences in other projects to support outreach and stakeholder relations – and it is funded by CBE JU, and its members Biobased Industries Consortium and the European Commission.

LUCRA is a Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) funded initiative on a mission to revolutionise biobased chemicals. Ten industrial partners and renowned research centres from seven countries representing the whole value chain from feedstock to products have joined forces to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of transforming organic waste into bio-succinic acid on a pre-industrial scale.

By combining cutting-edge thermal and enzymatic technologies, innovative fermentation and electrochemical processes, LUCRA, led by Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant, Belgium will pave the way for a sustainable, resource-efficient, and circular bioeconomy.

VIOBOND

VIOBOND aims to take significant commercialization steps based on the natural wood component lignin, creating industrial technologies to significantly reduce the share of fossil raw materials in phenol formaldehyde resin, which is widely used in various everyday products.

earlier projects COUNTLESS partners were involved in, or projects we are building upon

SWEETWOODS

The SWEETWOODS flagship project implemented a novel technology to convert almost all (over 90%) of hardwood into usable high value biomaterials and bioproducts. The COUNTLESS project partner FIBENOL demonstrated at scale how a diversity of products can be generated from wood, and established novel bio-based value chains with low ecological footprint.

This flagship in Estonia now supplies lignin to the COUNTLESS project.

LIGNICOAT

The LIGNICOAT project aimed to demonstrate technical and economic feasibility of the use of lignin as raw material to produce bio-resins for different applications in the field of functional and sustainable coatings.

UNRAVEL

UNique Refinery Approach to Valorise European Lignocellulosics

UNRAVEL demonstrated a sustainable and economically feasible biorefinery for the conversion of second generation biomass into fuels, chemicals and building materials.

WoodZymes

The WoodZymes project covered the entire value chain from forest biomass (hardwood and softwood) to phenolic and sugar-derived equivalents of fossil-derived chemicals for the manufacture of medium-density fibreboard (MDF), polyurethane (PU) insulation foam and bleached paper, through the transformation of underutilised lignin and hemicellulose fractions extracted from pulp mills with tailor-made extremophilic enzymes.

LIFE VIABLE

The LIFE VIABLE project aims to improve the sustainability and the environmental impact of epoxy resins manufacture by lowering the BPA content in the formulation of epoxy resins by 20 to 50%.
