As part of the COUNTLESS project, two stakeholder-focused SWOT workshops were organised by VITO and CLIB and moderated by CLIB. Bringing together experts from industry, academia and the policy sphere, the workshops created a structured forum to discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with the production and deployment of bio-based aromatic intermediates derived from lignin. The outcomes will directly contribute to the development of the COUNTLESS roadmap towards the sustainable and economically viable production of lignin-based platform chemicals.
The first SWOT workshop focused on the production of lignin-based platform chemicals. Participants explored the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats associated with converting lignin into valuable aromatic intermediates. Discussions highlighted the significant innovation potential of lignin as a renewable carbon source and its role in expanding the portfolio of sustainable chemical building blocks. At the same time, stakeholders stressed the importance of addressing technical and economic challenges related to feedstock variability, process efficiency and commercialisation pathways.
The second workshop concentrated on the implementation of lignin-based aromatics in industrial applications. Building on the initial analysis, participants reviewed market perspectives, customer requirements and value-chain dynamics. Special attention was given to identifying the conditions needed for successful market uptake, including collaboration across the value chain, sustainability validation and the creation of compelling business cases. The workshop format encouraged active participation through collaborative discussions and the joint refinement of the SWOT analysis.
While the detailed discussions remain confidential, several overarching themes emerged consistently across both workshops. Stakeholders recognised the strong long-term potential of lignin-derived aromatics but also emphasised that technical innovation alone will not guarantee market success. Cost competitiveness, reliable supply chains, industrial partnerships, and clear value propositions were identified as critical factors for future implementation. Participants also underlined the importance of robust sustainability evidence and close cooperation between researchers, technology developers, producers, and end users.
By gathering perspectives from diverse stakeholder groups, the two COUNTLESS SWOT workshops provided a comprehensive picture of the current landscape and future possibilities for lignin valorisation. The insights generated will now serve as a key input for the project roadmap, helping to guide strategic decisions and support the development of competitive, sustainable and scalable pathways for bio-based aromatic intermediates in Europe.
